Both trees are located in Yosemite National Park and were used to attract tourists.

The first one was carved in 1878 through a dead stump in Tuolumne. Its picture in the vignette is of course much more recent (1939).

The second one stood in Wawona. It was carved in 1881 enlarging the natural breaches through a live tree. It fell down in the late 60s. The pictures (or at least the first one) seem to have been taken not long after the carving.
